The Axminster United Against Racism group held an event to engage with the local community on Saturday.

Following the publication of their new leaflet, which will be used as a tool to open up discussion about racism and inequality, two members from Axminster United Against Racism - which supports the Black Lives Matter movement - manned a stand in Market Square on Saturday.

Helen Jenkins and Jo Hawkins said that some uncomfortable conversations were had, but overall it was a positive engagement exercise with the community.

Jo said: "It was good to start having conversation around race, prejudice and Inequalities, and raise awareness that there are things we can all do to challenge racism."

Helen added: "It was a real eye opener; we had some difficult conversation but its great to be able to have these conversations, it has to start somewhere."

The anti-racism group, which has previously held peaceful events on the Minster Green and a community litter-pick, are now hoping to engage with local primary schools to raise awareness about racism from a young age, and are looking into working alongside the local police.

They are also planning to be in Market Square in small groups every other weekend leading up to Christmas.
