Axminster Medical Practice has reported on a "dramatic rise" in the number of positive COVID-19 cases among its patients in the last fortnight.

It comes amid rises in cases across Devon and nationally, with the Kilmington, Colyton and Uplyme area, just outside of Axminster, now one of the worst affected areas.

The area currently has 89 confirmed cases of COVID-19, an increase of 66 on the previous week, and now has a case rate per 100,000 people of 1,059.3 – way above the national average.

Axminster itself has 30 confirmed cases, up 11 on the previous week, with a case rate of 315.7, which is below the national average.

However, Axminster Medical Practice released the following statement this week: "In the last 10 days, 60 of our patients have been diagnosed with COVID-19. This is the highest number we have ever seen.

"Despite this there is a worrying disregard of potential COVID symptoms."

The medical practice reminded patients that if they have a persistent cough, fever or change in taste or smell they need to self-isolate and book a PCR test.

You can find out more information on coronavirus symptoms here.

Lateral flow tests (test at home kits) are only for use for patients without symptoms.

If you have symptoms you must get a PCR test online or by calling 119 or order online at www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test

The statement added: "We already have staff off due to COVID, but it is essential we avoid an outbreak which would close the surgery. This is why social distancing measures and telephone triage must stay in place."
