REWIND: Trinity Square decorated for a celebration. Can anyone put a date to this?

This old photograph of Trinity Square in Axinster was sent to Nub News by Dick Sturch, who is writing a series on life at 'The Camp' in Millwey Rise, where the American forces had a hospital at the time of the D-Day landings.

After the closure of the hospital, the Nissen huts were turned into social housing.

Mr Sturch asks whether anyone can identify the lady crossing the Square.

The town centre is decorated with Union flags and bunting, so could this be for the Coronation in 1953? A policeman stands on duty at the highly decorated fountain - something you are unlikely to see again!

Auctioners R & C Snell, now estate agents Symonds & Sampson, can be seen on the right, next door to the New Commercial Hotel and bakers S.O. Gill, now occupied by the River Cottage Kitchen.

Opposite is the Frederick Baker department store in Trinity House, which is currently being refurbished to a high standard by Axminster Property. The George Hotel, also recently refurbished, stands proud, overlooking the Square.

Looking at the style of motor cars parked outside the shops, it could well have been the early 1950s.

If anyone can put a date to this photograph and/or identify the lady walking across the street, please email [email protected]
