In its bid to achieve Plastic Free Community Status, the Plastic Free Axminster group has published a handy list of recycling points in the town.

The list includes many lesser-known recycling points where you can dispose of those more unusual items that we often don't know what to do with - everything from light bulbs to toothbrushes!

So if you're having a spring clear-out, here's the list to help you dispose of items in an environmentally-friendly way:

Axminster Bay Cafe @ Pippins Community Centre (not on Tuesdays) - baby food pushes, oral care products including toothpaste tubes and pumps, toothbrushes, dental floss containers and electric toothbrush heads (these items should be washed).

Axminster Guildhall - low energy lightbulbs (the local tip will take ordinary white and coloured light bulbs)

Axminster Medical Practice - used inhalers (bagged and put through letterbox)

Axminster Post Office - used postage stamps

Axminster Printing Company - printer ink cartridges, writing instruments such as pens, highlighters, felt tips, etc.

Bennett & Rogers - prescription glasses

Cloud Nine - mascara wands (just the brushes, washed and dried)

Tesco and Co-op - carrier bags, magazine wrappers, bread wrappers, some inner cereal wrappers, some frozen food bags.

Flamingo Pool - old mobiles and some printer ink cartridges

Ganesha Wholefoods - water filters

Pippins Community Centre and The Corner House Bakery - plastic milk bottle tops

Wagg 'n' Purr in Colyton - pet food pouches

Seaton Library or Musbury Primary School - crips packets

Honiton Eye Clinic or Robert Frith Opticians in Bridport - contact lenses and packaging

Plastic Free Axminster is a local community group which, along with hundreds of others around the country, is part of the marine conservation and campaigning charity, Surfers Against Sewage's Plastic Free Community Network.

It aims to help the town tackle the most avoidable types of single-use plastic available and for Axminster to achieve 'Plastic Free Community' status.

To be awarded this highly-prized status, the charity requires Plastic Free Axminster to successfully meet the following five objectives:

  • Local Governance - The local council must pass a resolution of its support of becoming a Plastic Free Community
  • Resistance Hubs - Local Businesses - Remove at least three single-use items plastic from a minimum of five local businesses
  • Plastic Free Allies - Create widespread community engagement and spread the plastic-free message
  • Plastic Free Rallies - Hold at least two community engagement events in one calendar year, open for all to attend
  • Local Resistance Steering Group - A local group of stakeholders, including at least one council representative, must meet at least twice a year to discuss progress go the Plastic Free Communities status
