Axminster Heritage Centre volunteer David Garrod has been growing a beard over the past month as part of Bowel Cancer UK’s ‘Decembeard’ campaign.

David decided to take part in the fundraising event as his month, who is now 89 years old, suffered from bowel cancer 20 years ago.

He said: “It was quite advanced, and she was referred to the Royal Marsden Hospital who offered her a new almost untried treatment. It worked and she became cancer free.

“It was this pioneering treatment, and the fact that due to the coronavirus lockdown charities have lost funds, that I decided to grow the beard and raise what I could for bowel cancer.”

David set himself a target of raising £100 but has now raised £160 and donations can still be made on his JustGiving page.

His family and friends have said they like his new facial hair so much he will be keeping it throughout lockdown.

For a second year running, coronavirus looks likely to cause the postponement of scheduled local elections.
