Axminster Heritage Centre, Thomas Whitty House, Bradshaw Mee
UNTIL Thursday 8th July
Axminster Heritage Centre's Heritage Alive presents Raga - "That which colours the mind" with sitar player Ricky Romain at Thomas Whitty House, Bradshaw Meeting Room, Silver Street, Axminster, Devon, EX13 5AH/
Ricky Romain began his classical Indian musical study by becoming a residential pupil of Punita Gupta (a disciple of Ravi Shankar) in Southall London in 1972. In 1975 he then went on to study with Bengali sitar player P. Gunguly.
Ricky has performed regularly throughout the west country, nationally, and in Europe.
Since the early 1980s, he has been involved in a wide variety of collaborations and recordings with classical Indian musicians. In addition, he has worked with practitioners from a variety of musical and artistic genres including jazz, rock, folk, world and western classical music, as well as dance and movement.
He has also been involved in a number of educational and community arts projects using Indian folk and classical music as a focus for inter-disciplinary study.
For the last fifteen years he has been an associate lecturer in Indian Classical music at the University of Plymouth.
In this performance/talk Ricky will play 'Raga Yaman' which is the first raga that all Indian classical musicians learn whether instrumentalist or vocalist. He will set out how the raga unfolds both melodically and rhythmically and explain some of the principles that will make understanding a Raga more accessible and enjoyable.
